How We Built TapReview: A £9/Month Product for UK Tradespeople in 30 Days

Every service business has a software product hiding inside it. Sometimes the product is complex — a multi-tenant platform, a marketplace, an AI-powered workflow engine. And sometimes it's beautifully simple: a tool that does one thing, for one audience, better than anything else available.

TapReview is the second kind. It sends automated Google review requests to tradespeople's customers via WhatsApp and SMS after every job. That's it. One job. One message. One tap to leave a review. £9/month.

This is the build story — the market gap we found, how we built it in 30 days, and what the data says about why it works.

    The gap we found

    The thesis behind Hello Crossman is that every service business with a repeatable process has a software product hiding inside it. We've built over 100 products across different sectors, and the pattern is always the same: find the workflow the business does manually, understand why existing tools don't fit, then build the simplest possible solution.

    With TapReview, the workflow was review collection for tradespeople. And the gap was staring at us from the data.

    The demand side

    According to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses before hiring. That number has been climbing for years and shows no sign of slowing. For tradespeople specifically — plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers — reviews are the primary way homeowners distinguish quality tradespeople from cowboys.

    The UK trades sector is enormous: roughly 1.88 million people in skilled trades roles, with 870,000+ construction SMEs making construction the largest business sector in the country. The private housing repair and maintenance market is worth £39.6 billion — and growing 40% over the next decade according to Checkatrade's 2024 UK Trade Skills Index.

    But here's where it gets interesting. According to Birdeye's 2025 State of Google Business Profiles, only 45% of home services businesses have a verified Google Business Profile — the lowest rate of any industry. The construction sector is among the least digitally advanced in the UK, with only 10% of construction businesses analysing any data and only 13% using cloud computing.

    So: massive demand for reviews from consumers, massive pool of tradespeople who need them, and almost nobody in the trades actually using the digital tools that would help. That's the gap.

    The supply side

    The existing solutions for review collection fall into three buckets — and none of them fit UK tradespeople.

    Enterprise review management tools (Podium, Birdeye, Reputation.com) cost $249–$599/month. They're built for multi-location businesses with marketing teams. A sole-trader plumber in Leeds isn't spending £400/month on review software.

    Trade directory platforms (Checkatrade, MyBuilder, Rated People) cost £90–£400+/month and create closed review ecosystems — the reviews stay on the platform. Leave Checkatrade, and your reviews stay on Checkatrade. Google Reviews, by contrast, are yours forever.

    NFC review cards and QR codes (OneTap, TAPiTAG, V1CE) cost £10–£30 one-off but only work in-person. If you forget to have the card on the van, or the customer isn't there when you finish, you get nothing. And there's no follow-up system.

    What didn't exist: a simple, cheap tool that sends a review request via WhatsApp or SMS — the channels tradespeople and their customers actually use — automatically after every job. No app to install. No card to carry. No marketing team required. Just a message with a link, sent at the right time, to the right channel.

    The 30-day build

    Week 1: Specification and architecture

    The spec phase defined the core user flow: tradesperson finishes a job → enters customer name and phone number → TapReview sends a WhatsApp message (with SMS fallback) containing the tradesperson's personalised Google review link → customer taps the link and leaves a review → if no review after a few days, TapReview sends one follow-up.

    We chose WhatsApp as the primary channel because of the data: Ofcom's 2025 Online Nation Report shows 92% of UK smartphone users have WhatsApp installed, with 76% opening it daily. WhatsApp messages have a 95–98% open rate vs roughly 36% for email in the UK (DMA UK, 2025). SMS serves as the fallback for customers who don't use WhatsApp.

    The architecture was deliberately simple. React frontend, Node.js backend, PostgreSQL database, Twilio for WhatsApp/SMS delivery. No AI features, no complex integrations — just a clean pipeline from job completion to review request.

    Weeks 2–3: Core build

    The core build followed our standard frontend-first development methodology. We built the customer-facing experience first — the WhatsApp message, the review link flow, the follow-up sequence — then wired up the backend.

    Key decisions during the build:

    Pricing at £9/month — below every competitor and every directory subscription. The logic: if a single Google review is worth an estimated £2,000–£3,000 in revenue (based on Harvard Business School research showing a one-star improvement increases revenue by 5–9%), then £9/month pays for itself with one review from every six months of use. The ROI argument is trivially simple.

    No contract — cancel anytime. Tradespeople are (justifiably) sceptical of subscription traps after experiences with directory platforms. No-contract pricing removes that objection entirely.

    WhatsApp Business API via Twilio — rather than asking tradespeople to set up their own WhatsApp Business account, TapReview handles the messaging through the API. The tradesperson never needs to open WhatsApp themselves.

    Week 4: Production hardening and launch

    The final 10% — the production hardening that turns a working prototype into a product real people can trust with their business reputation. Authentication, error handling, payment processing via Stripe, GDPR compliance, delivery monitoring, and the thousand small things that make software feel professional.

    The channel choice isn't just a feature — it's the entire value proposition. The data makes this clear:

    Over a year, that's 12 reviews via email vs 108 via WhatsApp. The difference between being invisible on Google and dominating your local search results.

    Womply's research shows that businesses with 25+ fresh reviews earn 108% more revenue than average. At the WhatsApp response rate, a tradesperson hits that threshold within 3 months. At the email response rate, it takes over 2 years.

    This is why TapReview couldn't have been built as an email tool. The entire product thesis depends on reaching customers through a channel they actually check — within minutes, not hours — while the quality of the job is still fresh in their mind.
