To create a digital presence for Bulb, a green energy startup, that rivals the ‘Big Six’ energy companies by simplifying the energy switching process, offering transparent tariffs, and providing exceptional customer service.
Bulb was my first project when I joined Neverbland as Product Lead. The founders, Hayden and Amit, had extensive experience in energy and consulting and were passionate about bringing a customer-centric green energy company to market. We conducted workshops to understand Bulb’s business needs and the energy sector, and led in-person research groups to uncover customer frustrations with current suppliers and identify opportunities for improvement. The goal was to capture the underserved London rental market, particularly Millennials, and build a base of engaged users who could drive a powerful network effect through word-of-mouth referrals.

After conducting extensive research, we set out to create site maps, wireframes, technical documentation, and a backlog of tasks. Our goal was to launch live within nine months of our initial engagement. The responsive UI designs were based on brand guidelines provided by Ragged Edge. The focus was on creating an easy switching process, clear data visualisations, online bills, account management, and a community support forum.
We delivered a comprehensive suite of digital products for Bulb, including a marketing site, switching site, customer portal, community and support forum, blog, and back-end management platform. We integrated multiple complex third-party APIs and databases to cover live energy tariffs, usage, billing, and servicing. Key features included an industry-leading referral scheme that rewarded both new and existing customers, clear and simple online interfaces, and robust backend systems to ensure secure and reliable service.
Bulb quickly grew to capture a significant market share, achieving unicorn status.
